Recently I did some research towards a project that got me thinking about what freedom means for children in this day and age, wanting to inspire hope! However my ideas fell on stony ground. ‘I don’t get it’ I was told, and that was the last I ever heard of the project. However, the ideas around freedom lurk.
What does freedom mean?
How can we be freer, less slavishly bound to the past, less controlled by old prejudices and wounds, to be more able to have a voice and be the change?
Is freedom simply a concept?
Are we are kidding ourselves that we can ever be free as we are all trapped somehow?
Is freedom something only experienced by the brave and the enlightened?
Is freedom for those who are able to extricate themselves from that which no longer serves – free of limiting beliefs, outdated concepts, old wounds and prejudices, hatred and fear, free of the good opinion of others?
Is freedom a psycho-physical experience? A wonderful unity and ease that is revealed when we come into balance. Is freedom balance? Is freedom the natural state of being that man(un)kind has interfered with in so many ways?
Both forgiveness and letting go seem to be a big part of regaining our natural freedom.
Feeding past wounds takes a lot of energy. It amazes me how us people hold onto historical grudges that keep us bound in the past. Holding onto fearful seperatists thoughts will lead to anxiety, which seems endemic.
It takes awareness and courage to let go, to be loving and free to make a difference. We are all connected. We are all one! It’s so daft to be in competition with each other! Guess what? None of us are getting out of here alive!
When will we start to work together for the greater good?
Viktor Frankl’s book ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ talks about his experiences in the concentration camps during WW2 and teaches how our thinking can transcend the very worst situations and find love and meaning, hope and courage. It is a short wonderful read.
I am ever hopeful of a future where people care about all living creatures on our beautiful planet and lay down their weapons and love instead.
I am watching the swallows this summer. I am freely flying with them over the fields as they soar into the divine. I am dreaming big with these small yet mighty birds.
I believe I can create a wildlife reserve before I die, a gift for the children of the future. I don’t know how it will manifest but I believe it will happen and that art will give me the freedom and means whereby to create it.

My studio is open to visitors all summer by appt.
Come and watch the swallows soaring with me. It’s wonderful!
