I spent this summer in the garden, painting and hanging out with my ponies. This large canvas is painted using feathers found during my winter dog walks. I am using feathers in an attempt to really draw upon the feel, spirit and energy of birds and in this painting, the buzzing life force of the summer hedgerow.
The Golden Hedgerow is one of the more abstract pieces I have made. Luckily for me, at every stage visitors to the studio have been really encouraging about the painting as a work in progress. A recent visitor, a lovely lady in her 80’s, said that my art has become ‘less accessible but more interesting’ than when she had last seen it prior to lockdown.
Well, I will definitely take that comment!
One of my hopes as an artist is to keep developing and not stay safe or get stuck in a rut. Both of which are much harder things to do than they sound!
The main composition of this painting, that is the underlying structure that I hope holds it together, is the golden spiral, a shape that is infinitely repeated when magnified. I used the golden spiral as a way to express my wonder at the complexity and beauty of nature and to suggest that all things are infinitely connected.
With no insects there is no life on earth! Planting a hedgerow, no matter how small is amazing for our wildlife.
This painting is available and will be hanging on my living room wall until it finds a new home.
Due to it’s size it is available for collection or local delivery only.
My studio is open to visitors by appointment.
Best wishes and have a good week
