The walls might not have ears but they do have eyes, that is windows…
I think of my small seascapes as windows to the sea.
Painting, I hear the sea in my mind’s ear and see it in my imagination.
I love the way a small canvas size can suggest a vast oceanic space.
These paintings are my way of being at sea whilst living inland!
The ocean flows like the breath…
Seascapes flow on the imagination…
The expression ‘the walls have ears’ may originate from a story about Dionysius of Syracuse (430 – 367 B.C.) who had an ear-shaped cave cut and connecting the rooms of his palace to hear what was going on!

PS – My process – I paint these outside using very thick oil paint often mixed with sand collected from the beach using palette knives, brushes and my fingers. I wear gloves as I get in a terrible mess! Then I leave the paintings in a drying shed for at least a month before coming back in and adding detail. Next I take them to be framed. Now the seascapes have the feeling of looking through a window. I then come back in again and paint more detail. Often tiny flecks of light on the crest of a wave etc. being very careful not to get oil paint on the frame. Then I sign them!
Some of the paintings are very textural so you will notice shadow in some of the photos that won’t be there in real life!
PPS – I have a customer who has grouped 6 of my small seascapes on a wall. They really look stunning hung as a collection in her home in this way.
My studio in South Lanarkshire is open to visitors by appointment. Warm welcome guaranteed. xx
