“Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic” – Keith Haring
Two recently watched excellent drama series on BBC iPlayer – Sherwood and Blood Lands – both look at how events of the past shape the present and future. How communities are effected for generations by violent events and troubles. Blood Lands is about Northern Ireland, Sherwood deals with the miners strike.
In Lanark there is a 200 year old small stone statue called The Girnin’ Dug.
I’ve drawn and written about it before. Click here for a link to a blog about the history as to why the dog girns!
For two hundred years Lanark has loved it’s Girnin’ Dug. What’s not to love?
I just started to wonder what would happen if the dug had a different attitude? Isn’t attitude everything? Waggy tails people!
The idea of the smiling dog made me laugh, so with a glass of wine on a Friday night and a magical pen – the girnin’ dug became the grinning dug!
A local friend commented on my Facebook page –
‘He widnae be a Lanarkian if he stopped girnin!’
Followed by lots of laughing emoji’s.
You gotta wonder!? As Keith Haring said ‘…art lives through magic!’
